Message from Mr Rob:
Hope everyone had a safe and fun summer!
This website is where you can find all of our adaptive art content online.
This material supports our in-class projects.
Last year we had Elementary & High School as different areas.
This year I am pooling everything together into one area since I now have Middle School
in addition to Elementary & High School.
If we return to predominately remote learning then I will adjust this site accordingly.
I look forward to a super year of art exploration ahead!

Dear Students and Parents,
This week it is time to get silly! Art can make fun of the world and change every day objects. Dadaism is an art movement from the early 1900's that looks at normal things and transforms them in a crazy way. It helps us to see that anything can be art! Here is an example of Dadaism by the artist Marcel Duchamp called Bicycle Wheel:

Here is an example of Dadaism by the artist Marcel Duchamp called Bicycle Wheel:
From Dadaism came an art movement called Surrealism that looks at imagination and dreams. Surrealist art shows things that are fiction and make-believe. It brings dreams into the world we see every day. Here is an example of Surrealism by painter Salvador Dali called The Persistence of Memory:
Sometimes all it takes is putting two normal things together in a silly new way. Here is an example of Surrealism by painter Rene Magritte called The Son of Man:
You can use words and ideas also. An egg has a shell so this photo puts an egg together with a real shell.
Here is an example of Surrealism by photographer Man Ray called Egg and Shell:

Dadaism and Surrealism Art Activities:
We can make original art in the style of Dadaism and Surrealism. Here is a list of ideas for you to think about. You can also do something else that you think is silly or may come from a dream that is fiction.
1. Draw a silly picture
2.Take a photo of something silly.
3. Put together some objects that are different from each other and take a photo.
4. Make a silly outfit for a toy
5. Make a silly hat
6. Think about a dream and draw it
7.Create a silly machine
9.Put things in your shoes
Here is are example photos. Mr Rob has a silly hat and a banana on his head. There is also a pink squirrel. He is wearing sunglasses with paper eyes taped onto them. The background is a painting showing a swirl of color.

Dear Students and Parents,
Art can be a way to tell a story. Many artists use their work to talk about their life or send a message. Some of the subjects that artists talking about include growing up, a special experience, or expressing a viewpoint. This week we will see examples of different artists and the stories they have to share. After seeing these examples we can then use art to tell stories of our own!
If you like please send your images for our student art gallery to Mr. Rob: [email protected]

Storytelling with Art
Ancient Art Stories
A long time ago people did not have books, tv, and computers to communicate with each other and tell stories. They used pictures on walls and natural materials. The art they made lasted a long time inside caves underground. They often made pictures about finding food and shelter. We can see these images now and understand what they were talking about through art. Here are some photos and videos about these cave paintings:
We learn the stories of people from long ago because they left pictures for us on cave walls. Artists today tell their stories with pictures and words using modern tools like books, tv, and computers. Here are stories that you can find in the library. Beneath each video is a question that you can answer with art that you make at home!
Can you make a picture showing how you are spending your time at home?
Can you make a picture showing your favorite foods?
Can you make a picture showing how you like to make art?
Can you make a picture showing a favorite pet?
Can you make a picture that starts with a dot?
Can you make a picture about the music that you like?
Can you make a picture using your favorite letter?
Storytelling Art Activities:
Please choose at least one of the following activities to make your art:
1) Think about the cave drawings we saw. Outline your hand on paper many times using the colors of the rainbow. The lines can overlap and your hand can go in different directions.

Colors and Rainbows
Photography uses light to make pictures. Light is full of colors. These colors make the color wheel.
The color wheel colors always appear in order as with a rainbow. Rainbows occur when light from the sun moves through water and gets broken up to show all of the colors.
The fact that light contains colors was shown in an experiment a long time ago by the famous scientist Isaac Newton. He is the same person who thought about gravity after an apple fell on his head! He used glass instead of water. First he sent the light through the glass to make a rainbow. Then he sent the rainbow back through the glass in reverse to show that they made up light. This reverse process proved how colors make up light.
When you see a rainbow the colors always appear in the same order:
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
To remember this order we say the name:
R O Y G B I V

Watch these videos to find out more about colors and rainbows.
Finding Rainbows
Here are some examples of rainbows everywhere!
Rainbow Art Activity:
Now that you know how rainbows form from light you are ready to make a rainbow at home. Can you find things where you live to make your own rainbow? For example, collect different color foods, clothes, or toys and put them into rainbow ROY G BIV order and then take a photo. How many rainbows can you make with different materials?
Using crayons, paint, or colored pencils can you make an original rainbow?
Try to make a colorful rainbow also using other things. For example: use crayons to draw a rainbow showing a red fish, orange bug, yellow bird, blue whale, green frog, purple snail.

Photography: Landscapes and Sculptures Outdoors
Artists can also use cameras to take photographs outside. A landscape that shows trees, sky, clouds, mountains, lakes, and other natural features is often a popular subject for photographers. Ansel Adams is well known for his black-and-white photos of wild areas in America. Artists can also use natural materials to build sculptures in nature. Andy Goldsworthy puts together rocks, sticks, leaves, and other similar items to make sculptures. He then takes photos of his sculptures. This week we will look at their work. Our activity gives you a chance to take photos inspired by their art.
Slideshow and Videos
Please look at the slideshow images and videos below showing nature photography and sculpture.
Activity: Nature Art
Go outside and collect some nature items. Look for sticks, leaves, stones, flowers, leaves, seeds, pinecones, and anything else that is safe to pick up. Use what you find to make your own sculpture in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. Remember the student and teacher samples from the slideshow. Next take a photo of the sculpture.
BONUS ACTIVITY:
Remember the pictures you saw by Ansel Adams and take a landscape photo of a scene in nature.
Please take the pictures and email them to

Photography: Faces
A picture of a face is called a portrait. Some artists like to draw or paint or sculpt faces. Other artists use a camera to take a photograph. We saw earlier how you can find faces in things. Here are some videos about photography and an artist named Dorothea Lange who was a photographer.
Activity: Face Photos
You can take photos of faces with a camera just like Dorothea Lange. You can find a camera on your phone, tablet, or use a device that is just a camera. Dorothea Lange took pictures of people. We took photos before when we found faces in things. Lets try to find more faces!
Here are 3 things with faces that you can take a picture of:
1. Pet:
take a photo of the face of a dog, cat, fish, turtle, bunny, bird,
hermit crab, or other pet. You can also take a photo of any animal that you would like to have for a pet. It can be a picture from a book, toy, or another source. For example:
unicorn, dinosaur, elephant, or whatever you choose.
2.Toy:
take a photo of the face of a doll, stuffed animal, action figure
3. Magazine or Book:
take a photo of a face of a favorite hero, book character, or celebrity.

Introduction
Hi, I'm Mr. Rob!
I teach Adaptive Art at multiple sites in the Fulton County School System. I have been teaching art for 16 years.
Through adaptive art we can practice everyday skills, develop communication abilities, and enrich our awareness of ourselves and the world.
It is my pleasure to help students discover their potential and explore art every day!
